One of the earliest ‘kitchen sink’ dramas from the British New Wave of the 1960s, Room at the Top is a story of ambition and love set in a very real 1940s Yorkshire. Joe Lampton is a driven young man who sees no reason why he cannot make it directly to the top, setting his sights on a high-paying job and the daughter of a local industrial magnate. However when he meets Alice, a beautiful but unhappy married older woman, Joe’s plan slowly begin to unravel. With an Oscar-winning script by Greenock-born writer Neil Paterson, adapted from a novel by John Braine, the film paved the way for works by Tony Richardson, Lindsay Anderson and John Schlesinger.
